The gentleman in the image is Voltaire, who for a time graced the court of Frederick II of Prussia, known as Frederick the Great. King Fred loved to talk about the universe and everything at the end of a day’s work. He also used the salons of Berlin to get feedback in the development of public policy.

Fred would only talk in French; he regarded German as barbaric. Here we’ll use English.

The thread will be a stoush-free zone. The Comments Policy says:

  1. Good news that New Matilda is going to survive, under new editor/owner Chris Graham.

Marni Cordell, who has been the editor/owner is moving on to edit Crikey, which, I heard her say on radio, has significant reach with people of power and influence in its subscriber list.

  2. Watched the DVD series Orange is the New Black. Most enjoyable.

Not overly impressed with what I’ve seen of Wentworth, though that might have something to do with the fact that the DVD does not have subtitles for the hearing impaired. Just what I’d expect of Rupert Murdoch and Fox.

The lack of subtitles may be a financial thing.
Fox can’t run a balance sheet of negative $1bill like ABC and SBS can.

  4. jumpy,
They put subtitles on their movies. There is NO excuse for bad service to customers.

Supposed to be switching to NBN on Thursday. Its being done from Sydney from the management of the aged care home that runs the flats I’m in. We’re supposed to be getting ‘a letter’. If the aged care home stuffs up Barnaby Joyce and Malcolm Turnbull can expect some extra work on Thursday. Though I hate these fights with grossly inefficient bureaucracies.

Put up 2 new bookshelves yesterday for my DVDs. (Well, actually I got a mate to pick them up and put them together for me. I don’t have the breath to turn a screw.)

  5. According to Barnaby Joyce the PUPpies are a cult. Methinks he’s very worried about a PUP candidate standing against him in New England. On his present performance as the local member for New England, I would be too, if I were him.

  6. You need to be aware if you have an eBay account that there has been a Massive eBay hack: change your password now. Andrew Smith at The Conversation advises:

If you are an eBay user you should be concerned about this hack. You could be one of the many people whose details could have been extracted. And if that’s the case, the hackers now have your name, home address and date of birth. You don’t have to be an expert these days to know that this information could now be passed on to other criminal organisations.

As an eBay user, I will change my password and keep a closer eye on any eBay activity or suspicious emails for some time. Even after you’ve changed your password, there is a chance that you may be phished by these cyber-criminals. You might get an email saying that you need to respond to a query about an item you are selling, the real purpose of which is to commit fraud.

While eBay says it can see no evidence that user accounts having been abused and claims that financial details have not been compromised, it knows that this is now a major risk. Many accounts link to other personal details and millions of financial transactions a day take place on this very popular site.

  7. Brian,
I’ve never had an e-Bay account, (nor would i ever want one or use e-Bay – I’d never trusted them) yet ages ago for about six months I kept on getting e-mails about stuff I supposedly had bought or wanted to sell. I ignored them.
